Tom pursues Becky and persuades her to get engaged by kissing him. Their romance soon collapses when she discovers that Tom was engaged to another school girl. The book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has been widely adapted into feature films and television series. With The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain presents a sharp social commentary on 19th-century American life through mocking satire, humour, colloquial speech and uncouth language.
